I was looking to buy a cheap .ru domain but all cheap options were from russian websites. Unfortunately, they do not allow payment with Paypal and the others, like Godaddy, had very expensive domains. So, I luckily found DoHost, where you can buy a relatively cheap .ru domain with only $6/year! Renewal fee is also $6.

So yeah, get your .ru domain, and pay only $6 with PayPal!
Later edit:
Buying a .ru domain is not an easy task at all. It looks like Russia is somewhere outside Solar System, considering that a domain bought on the 2nd of October is still in a pending mode and the DNS has not been propagated yet.
Do DoHost story was short. After I placed the order and paid for it, I got an email telling me my order was cancelled. I asked them why and the only reason provided was I’m not russian.
This is the last conversation I had with them:

Hello,
Please check ticket #938472
We have credit your account with the funds to be used with any other order, if you want us to refund the transaction to your PayPal account, jut let us know.
You aren’t allowed to register .RU and you aren’t Russian.
Regards,
DoHost Team
That’s bull shit with Russian residence.
I quote from http://cctld.ru/en/domains/domens_ru/
There are no limitations on residence; individuals are allowed to register domain names under .RU.
Yeah, I guess my money sucks, right?
That was all. My only hope to get a .ru domain ended. Until I went back to my old love – GoDaddy.
But this is another adventure of my life and it’s not even ended yet!
Cutting the story short, a domain I managed to buy for $15 is not available for me to use yet. That’s 4 days so far. I wonder where on earth is the bloody DNS clogged up. Russian authority said it’s godaddy’s fault. Godaddy said it’s Russian’s fault.
It’s nobody’s fault, but my damn domain is useless, although it’s being paid in full.
So yeah, if you want a .ru domain name and pay with Paypal, go to GoDaddy, place the order, take a vacation and come back in a month time to enjoy your acquisition.

Travis –
Thank you for contacting Chat Support how can I assist you today?
Marius Carneala – Hi Travis
Marius Carneala – I bout a .ru domain name on the 2nd of Oct and it looks like I can’t administer it within Domains Manager. I could only access it for 1 day until it became unaccessible at all
Marius Carneala – root@xxx [~]# dig xxx.ru ; <<>> DiG xxx <<>> xxx.ru ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 12159 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;xxx. Marius Carneala – bought above, sorry
Marius Carneala – I contacted the russian authority and they said the problem is with my hosting. really?
Travis – The domain is currently pending update with the registry. That is why you don’t have access.
Marius Carneala – English please. When will I have access to it?>
Marius Carneala – I already paid for it and I cannot use it
Travis – I don’t know, we don’t control that.
Travis – Its updating with the Registry of .ru domains.
Travis – Let me see if I can get any information
Marius Carneala – where and when does it take place? How long does it usually take? Those 72 hours have passed away
Marius Carneala – please. I will not leave the chat until I get the problem sorted out
Travis – We can be here awhile, I don’t control how long this takes. It is not affected by our company, we are a registrar, we resell domains owned by a registry, if they choose to make changes and updates, we cannot tell you how long it can take as we don’t know either.
Travis – I will take a moment to see if we have any information what they are updating.
Marius Carneala – please. provide me with that information to forward to the registry
Travis – Any DNS changes can take 5-7 days to complete at the .ru registry.
Travis – You are on day 4 after changing the nameservers.
Travis – If you still have no access after 7 days we can contact the registry but not before.
Marius Carneala – it looks like there is a monkey there who does this job manually
Marius Carneala – I hope it’s not needed
Marius Carneala – ok Travis, thanks for your time
Travis – Did you have any other questions I could assist with? If not, please close the chat by clicking the green end button in the upper right.
Marius Carneala – oh, I suggest you to warn users about this
Marius Carneala – it really frustrating to not know what’s happening
Travis – I will pass that along to our Front of Site guys
Marius Carneala – thanks
Travis – thank you for your time.
Marius Carneala – have a nice day!
Thanks for chatting. Please click the „Close” icon, and then tell us how we did.
The conclusion confirms my first supposal. Russia is really far away from civilization. The monkey that updates the DNS is probably left without bananas these days. She is not happy with the treatment; that’s why she does not update the DNS’s in proper time.
До свидания, Россия!
